How to talk to animals in Baldur's Gate 3

The Baldur's Gate 3 talk to animals mechanic requires a spell called, you guessed it, Speak with Animals. This spell, or related variants, come from different sources.

How to get the Speak with Animals spell

These are the ways that you can get the Speak with Animals spell in the game:

  • Class spells - Certain classes, such as the Druid and Ranger, can select these as spells.
  • Ritual feat - If you choose the Ritual Spells feat at levels 4, 8, or 12, you can obtain this as an ability.
  • Scrolls - You might find scrolls that let you cast this spell, or learn it as a Wizard.
  • Potion - A concoction can grant this effect.
  • Enchanted items - Some items may also have this as an available spell that is cast upon activation.

How to interact with animals

If you have the Speak with Animals spell, then you should look for a creature that you want to interact with. Here are a couple of notable instances:

  • Just west of Druid Grove, you'll find a dog next to a dead person. You'll realize his name is Scratch, and he thinks his master is sleeping. You can break the bad news to him, and ask him to follow your scent to your camp.
  • Near the area where you encounter Scratch, you'll see a cave. Inside, there's a formidable Owlbear. If you try to speak to it, it'll warn you not to approach it further. You'll also spot the Owlbear Cub hiding behind its mother. If you spare the cub, it'll eat its mom, though you can send it to your camp when you next stumble upon it.
